New York City is not only a dream!
As people always say, ‘Explore the world as much as you can’ and it was one of my dreams when I was still a little girl. At the time I got a scholarship from STIE Triatma Mulya Stenden, I knew that I was going to make my dream come true. Spending my third year in the main campus site in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands at NHL Stenden for one year made me wanted to explore the world more than I could imagine. Fortunately, STIE Triatma Mulya Stenden’s school systems allow me to finish my study year while exploring the world at the same time.
I am Mila Iswari, a 4th-year student of STIE Triatma Mulya Stenden who is currently doing my internship in New York City, The United States of America. I still remember a few months ago, I decided to choose NYC as my placement. It wasn’t easy, but I knew that I wanted this opportunity and I started my application. Long story short, I got accepted in one of the well-known catering companies in the USA, STARR Events. Currently, I am working as a Café Supervisor at DISNEY ABC Studio located in Manhattan, NYC.
At the time I arrived in NYC, I have neither family nor friends. Being lost in the middle of this metropolitan city was something that I couldn’t describe. My first impression about NYC is ‘fast’, people are expecting you to learn, work and adapt as fast as you can. Working as a supervisor allows me to get to know and delegate people who are coming from different countries and have different cultures. Cultural awareness is one of the most important aspects that I need to have to be able to respect and delegate my employees.
As a supervisor, I get the chance to see the daily operational business, learn the financial system, handling complaints, reporting skills, leadership skill and many more. Managing more than 30 employees who are older than me is quite challenging. Sometimes, I laughed and cried at the same time. In the beginning, it made me afraid to talk and delegate them but thanks to my managers who are always there and supported me whenever I needed. To tell the truth, I have learned more than I expected before and I am sure, this internship will help me to prepare my future as a young professional hotelier.
In this short story, one thing that I want to tell you, ‘ Never give up on your dream, no matter who you are, keep on believing and keep doing your best. It might not happen now, but for sure God is watching your hard work! Never lose your hope.
